Scheduled Nap Time

So the people at UCC decided it would be a good idea to have orientation on the day after everyone's arrival.  Meaning they expected all of the international students, coming from various places around the U.S, to sit in a cramped auditorium and fight our jet lag for what seemed to be just an 8 hour long lecture.  However…it was our first day of school as Irish students!

Here is my in my typical first day of school picture:

Finally after sitting all day long (and a quick nap during lunch break of course) we went on a tour of the campus. There is a beautiful quad, in the actual shape of a square and not a circle like Holy Cross where the oval patch of green attempts to be our quad.

No one dares to walk across the grass or through the sidewalks because of the urban legend that if you do you will fail your finals, whereas at Holy Cross no one dares step on the green for fear of death by the grounds crew.

As hard as I tried to pay attention during the tour I still am very unsure of the campus.  During orientation they gave three different numbers of how many students attend UCC but they range from 18,000-25,000 so either way it is significantly larger than Holy Cross.  So naturally there are many more buildings and the campus spans much farther.

It was further complicated by the fact that the tour guide had an adorable Irish accent and I was very preoccupied with asking him all about Irish phrases.  For example "craic", pronounced "crack", means fun; which makes the phrase "We had a lot of crack" very different over here than what we take it to be.  I'm sure the more time I spend here the more examples I will have of these but I find it very hard to believe that anything will top how funny this misunderstanding is.

Tonight all of the students are meeting up at the pub The Rock, so hopefully I'll make some more friends so you can see new faces on here soon!
